When it comes to ageing skin, the general consensus for skincare recommendations is: Retinol. So, what is this magical product?

It is the golden child, deprived from Vitamin A and has been shown to help stimulate collagen production, enhance skin cell turnover and improve fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. How does it work? When absorbed into the skin, the active form, known as Retinoic Acid, bounds to the skin cell receptors and causes skin cell turnover.

Introducing retinol into your skincare can be tricky, especially for those with sensitive skin. There is a catch to using the secret ingredient that promises fresh, plump skin. There is an adjustment period to using retinol with studies showing that results can be seen roughly two months into adding retinol into beauty routine. So, patience is the key here. Miracle don’t happen overnight.

Here are a few pointers when adding retinol to your skincare regime.

  1. Be even more diligent about wearing SPF. Why? Because retinol increases the sensitivity of your skin.
  2. Do not use AHA’s, Vitamin C or benzoyl peroxide when using retinol. Why? Because these active ingredients cancel each other out, which means skin irritation.
  3. Introduce retinol gradually, especially when the concentration is stronger. Use sparingly, once a week for beginners.
  4. Do not use when pregnant! An alternative is Bakuchiol
